Cowork and chat are becoming one Claude

Claude Cowork and Chat are merging into one app from 16 September 2026, with Claude Docs, Claude Slides and Claude Design built straight into conversations.

Worth Knowing?

✅Yes, if you already juggle Cowork and chat for different parts of the same job

❌No, if you're on a Team or Free plan and don't mind waiting a few more weeks

01What Changed?

Claude Cowork and Chat are merging into a single app starting 16 September 2026. Claude Docs and Claude Slides launched at the same time. Claude Design now works straight inside your everyday conversations too. Ask for a document and you write it together. Ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides, ready to edit and present or download as PowerPoint or PDF.

02Why Should I Care?

You don't have to decide anymore whether a task is a quick chat question or a Cowork-sized project. Claude works that out and pulls in whatever it needs, from a full document to a slide deck, without you opening a different app or losing the context you'd already built up.

03Who Benefits?

Anyone who's ever started a task in chat and realised halfway through it needed Cowork's bigger toolkit will feel this first. Business owners and assistants building weekly reports, decks or client documents get the most obvious win, since the whole thing now happens in one conversation instead of three separate apps.

04Is It Worth Using?

Worth paying attention to if you already use Cowork or Claude Design regularly, since your existing chats, projects and connectors carry straight across with no setup on your end. If you've mostly stuck to chat, try it on the next report or deck you'd normally build yourself. That's the fastest way to feel the difference.

05Pros

1. One conversation now handles a quick question and a full multi-step project, so nothing gets lost moving between apps. 2. Claude Docs, Claude Slides and Claude Design work straight inside chat, with editing, presenting and PowerPoint or PDF export built in. 3. Existing Cowork chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills carry over automatically, with nothing to reconfigure. 4. You can check progress and approve steps from your phone while Claude keeps working in the background.

06Cons

1. Claude Docs, Claude Slides and the merged view are still in beta on paid plans, so behaviour may change before general release. 2. Team and Free plans don't get the merge yet, it's Pro and Max first, over the coming weeks. 3. Enterprise admins have to actively choose when to switch on Docs, Slides and Design, so nothing changes for managed accounts until that decision is made. 4. If you liked having a clean separation between quick chat and heavier Cowork work, that boundary is gone by design.

07Our Verdict

If you build reports, decks or client documents from a mix of quick questions and bigger projects, this removes a real bit of friction. Nothing you've built in Cowork disappears. The new Docs and Slides tools mean the output can go straight to PowerPoint or PDF without a separate export step. Try it on the next thing you'd normally build yourself before deciding how much to lean on it.

08FAQs

Do I need to do anything to get the merge?

No. If you're on Pro or Max, it rolls out automatically over the coming weeks on web, desktop and mobile. There's nothing to turn on.

What happens to my existing Cowork projects and chats?

Everything stays where you left it. Chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills all carry over with no extra setup.

Can I still download what Claude makes as a file?

Yes. Documents and presentations made with Claude Docs and Claude Slides can be edited directly, presented from Claude or downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF.

When do Team and Free plans get this?

Anthropic says they'll follow soon after Pro and Max, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes for their organisation.
