Claude Can Now Write to Microsoft 365 — Not Just Read It

Claude can now write to Microsoft 365: draft and send Outlook email, manage Teams calendar and edit OneDrive or SharePoint files. Admin approval required.

Worth Knowing?

✅Yes, if you use are 50% of the world using M365 tools regularly for client work

❌No, if your IT team is decidely AI unfriendly or you're 50% of the world who doesn't use M365 tools regularly.

01What Changed?

Claude's Microsoft 365 connector went from read-only to read-and-write FINALLY!! Previously Claude could only read your Outlook email, Teams calendar, OneDrive and SharePoint files and then summarize or draft suggestions for you. Claude can now draft and send Outlook email on your behalf, create and update events in your Teams calendar and edit or replace documents stored in OneDrive or SharePoint directly. Anthropic describes these as "write tools" added to the connector in the July 7–9, 2026 release notes. These tools let Claude move beyond producing text you copy and paste into Outlook or SharePoint. Instead you'll let Claude perform the actions inside Microsoft 365 for you and that removes the manual copy-paste step. Your organization still controls access. Teams need a Microsoft Entra admin to approve the new permissions before anyone in the org can use the write features. That admin step isn't automatic and it means IT policy decisions determine availability and scope for your team. What you get now is not just summaries and suggestions but operational actions inside your M365 environment, with admin-controlled approval gates for safety and compliance.

02Why Should I Care?

If you or your team spend time moving content between Claude and Microsoft 365 you'll save real time every day. Drafting an email in Claude then copying it into Outlook is one extra step that repeats dozens of times and was the most irritating limitation. Claude doing the send and scheduling tasks removes that repetition and reduces friction. Problem is, if your org uses centralized controls you'll need a Microsoft Entra admin to approve the permissions first. If the policy is nope you can only use our organization wide approved AI (or none at all) then, this is not going to benefit you much.

03Who Benefits?

Executive assistants gain the clearest, immediate value. You'll let Claude prepare and send meeting emails, accept or propose calendar slots and update shared prep documents without copying content between apps. That saves 10 to 30 minutes per meeting prep for many senior executives. Consultants and solo founders who juggle proposals and client comms will find the feature useful when moving language between M365 and client-facing tools. Claude can update a proposal draft in OneDrive, then send a client-ready email from Outlook and that removes a manual handoff that often causes small errors. Accountants and financial planners who routinely update documents and send secure messages will benefit if you set proper approval checks. Claude's write access helps when you need to push consistent language across reports and client emails quickly.

04Is It Worth Using?

Yes if you regularly use Outlook, Teams calendar, OneDrive or SharePoint for client work and you want to remove the copy-paste step. Claude will save time moving polished drafts into action, and that gives you more consistent communications and fewer manual errors. No if your team uses centralized IT controls and your Microsoft Entra admin won't approve the write permissions. Depending on your org's compliance needs you may be blocked until IT validates controls. Test the feature in a small pilot group, measure time saved and then scale if the pilot shows clear value.

05Pros

1. Saves time by removing the copy-paste step between Claude and Outlook or SharePoint, which reduces repeated manual work and small transfer errors. 2. Lets Claude perform operational tasks like sending email, scheduling events, and updating OneDrive or SharePoint files so your workflow requires fewer handoffs. 3. Improves consistency across client communications when Claude uses the same approved templates and language for emails and documents. 4.Update a document and send an updated client email in one flow rather than multiple apps and manual uploads. 5. Teams can test write features with a small set of users before broader rollout so you can validate controls and measure time saved.

06Cons

1. Requires Microsoft Entra admin approval before write features become available to anyone in the org which can delay adoption if IT has strict controls. 2. Risk of accidental sends or incorrect calendar changes if human review steps aren't enforced so guardrails are necessary to avoid client-facing mistakes. 3. Granting broad write access to multiple mailboxes or folders increases security exposure so limit scope to what you actually need. 4. You'll need logging, process documentation, and periodic reviews to prove proper use for regulated industries. 5. If Microsoft or Anthropic change the connector API or permission model you may need to adjust workflows and retrain staff.

07Our Verdict

If you're an executive assistant, consultant, solo founder accountant, or anyone who moves content between Claude and Microsoft 365 regularly this is a practical, time-saving upgrade. If your org won't approve the permissions you still get value from Claude's read-only capabilities for summaries and draft generation. When your admin approves write access start with drafts-and-review workflows and expand to direct send only after you see consistent, low-error results.

08FAQs

Do I need an IT admin to enable Claude's write features?

Yes. A Microsoft Entra admin must approve the new permissions before anyone in your organization can use the write features. This is an IT approval step and it isn't automatic.

What exactly can Claude do in Microsoft 365 now?

Claude can draft and send Outlook email, create and update events in your Teams calendar, and edit or replace files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, according to the permissions granted.

Can Claude send email without human review?

Technically Claude can send email if permissions allow it, and you can configure workflows that permit direct sends. I recommend requiring a human review step at minimum until you trust the outputs.

Is this secure for sensitive client data?

Security depends on permission scope, audit logging, and your internal controls. Limit write access to specific mailboxes and folders, enable logging, and have IT review the permission settings before rollout.

Will this work for shared mailboxes and group calendars?

Yes, if the Entra admin grants Claude the appropriate permissions for those mailboxes or calendars. Permission granularity depends on how your IT configures access.
